Your Guide to Beach Driving & Sunset Watching on Nantucket Island

May 8, 2026

If you ask anyone who has spent time on Nantucket Island, one thing you are guaranteed to hear is, “the sunsets on Nantucket are unforgettable.” When the Grey Lady lets the sun break through the clouds, there is nothing quite like watching the sky light up over the ocean, 30 miles out to sea. It is one of the island’s simplest and greatest gifts.

One of the best ways to experience these sunsets is right from the beach. Many of Nantucket’s beaches allow 4WD access with the proper permit, making it easy to drive on, set up for the evening, and enjoy the view.

There are two main beach driving permits on Nantucket: the Great Point permit and the Town permit. Each provides access to different beaches and areas across the island, and we are here to walk you through everything you need to know before heading out onto the sand.

Town of Nantucket Beach Vehicle Permit

The Town of Nantucket beach permit allows 4WD vehicles to access select beaches across the island, depending on seasonal rules, weather conditions, and daily beach postings. Because tides, erosion, and nesting wildlife can quickly impact access, beach openings and closures can change from day to day. It is always important to check current conditions before heading out, as restrictions may be put in place with little notice.

With a valid Town permit, drivers may access several popular beach areas including Low Beach, Cathcart Beach, Smith’s Point, 40th Pole, Eel Point, and Nobadeer Beach. Each location offers a different Nantucket experience, from quiet stretches of sand to popular sunset and fishing spots, making beach driving one of the island’s favorite summer traditions.

Costs:

Nantucket-Registered vehicle: $50 if purchased before May 31. $100 on or after June 1

Off-Island registered vehicle: $100 if purchased by June 30. $150 on or after July 1
The Town permit is valid from January 1 - December 31.

When planning a trip to Great Point or Coatue, it is important to stay informed on current beach conditions before heading out.
